CHARTAIR CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF SERVING THE TERRITORY

Chartair, the Northern Territory’s leading aircraft charter and general aviation company, will this month celebrate 50 years of serving Territorians across major centres and hundreds of remote communities throughout central and northern Australia.

Chartair first took to the skies in 1974 after Brian Smith expanded his Alice Springs aircraft sales company to also include charter flights.

Over the past 50 years, three of the Northern Territory’s aviation pioneers have owned and operated Chartair, including Brian Smith, who stared the company and operated it between 1974 and 1982 before selling it to Mr. John Tilley.

Tilley, who also owned Tillair, operated Chartair from its bases in Alice Springs and Uluru and sold to Roger Leach in 1988 who helped to grow Chartair into the company it is today.

Chartair now employs a team of 70 staff and operate a fleet of 40 aircraft from three bases at Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs serving major centres and more than 200 remote communities and stations via the Commonwealth Government Remote Air Service Scheme.

Chartair CEO, Luke Fisher, said that the anniversary is an extremely proud achievement for a company that has helped Territorians stay connected by providing safe and reliable air services.

Luke Fisher, CEO of Chartair said: “Very few companies get to celebrate their 50 ^th anniversary and this is something that everyone at Chartair is extremely proud of.

“From our beginnings back in 1974, operating from a single base in Alice Springs, we have grown to be a company employing a team of 70 people and operating a fleet of 40 aircraft from three bases meaning our customers can reach every corner of the Territory plus parts of Western Australia.”

“Chartair as we know it today is a tribute to Territory aviation pioneers, Brian Smith, John Tilley and Roger Leach, who all played an important role in developing and growing the company from an aircraft charter operator to now offer scheduled passenger flights as part of the Remote Air Service Scheme.”

“Chartair’s flights are vital to the communities we serve and allow people to access critical services such as medical treatment, while our freight operations deliver anything from pets to birthday cakes and everything in between.”

“We are proud to have supported Territorians over the past fifty years by providing an efficient and safe transport option that often means avoiding long road trips.”

Chartair is closely associated with national aviation group, Aviation Logistics, and its subsidiaries Air Link and AirMed. Aviation Logistics Executive Directors and Chartair Owners Mark Wardrop and Matthew Kline said that the 50-year milestone has been possible due to the dedication of current and past employees and support from customers.

Meet Jason and Alexandra, a father and daughter whose love of flying runs deep in the family.

Jason had flown for 20 years with Cathay Pacific, and Alexandra is our check and training pilot at Chartair.

As fate would have it, both father and daughter found themselves in Darwin today, with Jason visiting our Chartair office and Alexandra providing him with training on a Cessna 310. As they strolled around the tarmac, Jason caught a glimpse of an old mate – the Cessna VH-UCD. It was a plane he used to fly back in 1988, long before Alexandra was even a twinkle in his eye.

As they approached the aircraft, Jason couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia. He remembered the thrill of flying this very plane, and the adventures it had taken him on. And now, here was his daughter, a skilled pilot in her own right, following in his footsteps and making a name for herself in the world of aviation.

It was a heartwarming moment and one that reminded them the importance of passing on their love and knowledge of flying to the next generation.

Chartair's commitment to giving back: Transporting donations to Peppimenarti and Palumpa for The Salvation Army Australia and Casuarina Square

Chartair is dedicated to giving back to the community and making a positive impact. One of the ways we do this is through our community engagement activities, such as our partnership with Casuarina Square during the recent holiday season.

In this festive season, Chartair took care of the logistics for the generous sleigh-load of gifts collected by The Salvation Army Australia and Casuarina Square as part of their holiday giving campaign.

On one of our scheduled service flights, we transported these gifts to Peppimenarti and Palumpa for distribution to those in need.

We believe that it is important to give back to the community, especially during the holiday season, and we are honored to have been able to contribute to the well-being of those in Peppimenarti and Palumpa.

We are humbled by the generosity of the Territory community, The Salvation Army Australia, and Casuarina Square who have provided not only warm clothing but also toys and toiletries in abundance.

Flight Report: A day in the life of a Mail Plane

We recently sent Ellie, our Marketing Officer, on the CA921 as far as Warburton, before hopping on the CA901 back to Alice Springs, here’s what she discovered in her latest piece for the internal newsletter:

Today I am so excited to be flying on one of our aircraft from Alice Springs down to Warburton, just across the WA border (well, I guess 300 km is “just” across the border!) as part of our RASS Region 9 service. Region 9 is one of our biggest RASS runs and, perhaps the most challenging because of the vast distances involved and the volume of stuff we carry.

Once I had confirmed I didn’t need my passport, I lent a hand to the Alice Springs ground team who were checking the freight to be loaded onto the aircraft – and boy was there a lot of it!

Region 9 involves six flights a week and two C208 Caravans. I’m not sure why it is called the “Tri-State Region” as we don’t land in South Australia. Mind you Wingellina is right on the border of WA, NT and SA – close enough!

One of the main differences with Region 9 and our other RASS services is that one of the aircraft is dispatched to Kalgoorlie on Tuesday where it operates three flights in WA before heading back to Alice Springs on the Friday. Chartair has been operating these routes since about 2006 and has a “temporary” base in Kalgoorlie. During the height of COVID, when the WA border was firmly shut, we permanently relocated aircraft and crew to Kalgoorlie to ensure that the services could continue despite all the challenges and restrictions. Driving between Alice Springs and Kalgoorlie would take more than 26 hours across almost 2,000 km of unforgiving dirt roads – I think I’ll stick to flying!

One of the best parts of this trip was flying over a couple of little rock formations in the far southwest of the NT.

First stop was Wingellina, or Irrunytju. A small Indigenous community of about 160 people, established in the 1980s located about 12 km from the junction of the WA-NT-SA borders – guess that’s why it’s called Tri-State! Interestingly, Wingellina is located in the electorate of O’Conner, which at 868,576 km2 is one of the largest electoral constituencies in the world! Thank you, Wikipedia!

For Chartair, we are an essential lifeline for the community delivering heaps of mail, freight for the local store and essential medical stuff including vaccines.

After a quick stop in Jameson, we landed in Warburton.

Located 1,050 km southwest of Alice Springs and 750 km northeast of Kalgoorlie, Warburton is roughly the halfway point for today’s flight. With a population of about 600 people, Warburton is one of the biggest Aboriginal communities we serve and boasts a community store, health clinic, open air swimming pool, sports field, gallery and coffee shop and a roadhouse! Warburton is the only sealed runway outside of the main centres we fly to, and at 1,600m long is pretty impressive considering there’s a whole lot of nothing in the surrounding landscape!

After dropping off most of our payload at Warburton, it was time to load up with the essential items that were heading back to Alice Springs – including eskies full of pathology samples.

For me, who spends most of my time in head office, this was a great experience and a real insight to the work we do and how valued it is by the communities we serve. It really made me appreciate the huge amount of work that is involved in making just one flight go smoothly – there are dozens of moving parts, and it takes an amazing team effort from everyone at Chartair to make it happen.

Anyway, time for me to recline this seat and snooze all the way to Alice Springs. Keep it smooth, Arley.

Chartair is excited to announce that we have been granted a continuance of our Remote Air Services Subsidy (RASS) service for Regions 7, 8, and 9.

We are also pleased to announce that after a successful tender, we will be operating an additional Freight service for the Katherine region and its surrounds (Region 7F).

What does it mean to the new communities we are servicing?

In addition to the numerous destinations we cover on our existing RASS routes, we will now be flying to many other remote locations across the NT such as Montejinni Station, Inverway, Limbunya Station and all across the Barclay Region to transport medical equipment, Aus Post mail and essential goods on a weekly basis.

Father’s Day Special: 3 Generations in the Making

Father’s Day Special: 3 Generations in the Making

Growing up, Nathan Downham an apprentice with Chartair (pictured above right), found his interest in working on different types of aeroplanes from a young age.

His father, Mark Downham (middle), was recently appointed to the Head of Chartair Engineering team. Mark started his career with the Royal Australian Navy as an Aircraft Technician Airframes on the Sea King Helicopter in 1997. He then spent many years with the Navy, finishing his career in the Navy Contract Liaison Office and Nathan remembers going to help his father around the aeroplanes when he was younger.

Mark continued his work in the Aviation industry, working with BAE Systems and onto Airlines of Tasmania. He became a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) in 2015 on both fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft.

Nathan’s grandfather, John Downham (top; left), is the newest LAME joining Chartair recently. John began work as an apprentice aircraft engineer in January 1970 at the Aero Club of Southern Tasmania for 8 years. In which he gained his Aircraft Engineer licence. During 1980-1992 he furthered his career, gaining experience on turbine aircraft, turbine engine overhauls and propellers with various companies in Papua New Guinea.

Aviation runs deep in the family.  John recalls Mark was only 2 years old when they lived in Papua New Guinea.

In 2016 Mark took an opportunity in Fiji, where he obtained his Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) LAME licence and became the Chief Engineer of Advance Aviation Training - a leading provider of Professional Pilot Training. Under his remit was aircraft ranging from Cessna 150 to Twin Otter 400 Series aircraft. He then worked for Kokomo Private Island (Fiji) and eventually moved to Darwin, Northern Territory, in 2019 to work for Paspaley Aviation as the Chief Engineer.

“When I was younger, I went to work with my dad. I even got to go to Fiji and help him around the hanger and on the aircraft,” Nathan said.

The learning experience and skills learnt while working with his father have instilled the curiosity for aviation engineering in Nathan, just as how it came naturally to his own dad.

With John's recent achievements working in Fiji on piston engine aircraft, Amphibious turbine aircraft, and Paspaley Aviation on the Mallards, he and Mark have spent years working together in Fiji, over to Geraldton and now here with Chartair.

While Nathan has been enjoying his apprenticeship, his father and grandfather look forward to working together again to build great things at Chartair. Their bond is strong, and they support one another.

To young Aviation apprentices, we hope this story inspires you. And to all the fathers out there, thank you for giving our children wings to fly.

Our team of engineers at Chartair Alice Springs is always up to something.

Whether hammering out a complicated maintenance problem or just enjoying some downtime with a good chat with colleagues, these guys are always working hard to keep our aircraft in tip-top shape. Without them, we wouldn’t be able to fly!

With large hangar facilities in Darwin and Alice Springs, our Part 145 Approved Maintenance Organisation is able to support most of the general aviation maintenance requirements. We have CASA approvals for both locations and can provide third-party maintenance support for other operators and insurance companies.

Our engineering team supports an extensive range of aircraft, including single engines, twin engines, turbines, and pistons. They are the first point of contact for any airworthiness or maintenance issue and work closely with our customers to ensure your fleet always stays in top condition.

Chartair is pleased to announce that we have successfully become a BARS Registered Aircraft Operator.

Basic Aviation Risk Standard (BARS) is the name of an industry-wide program created by the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF) to provide organisations with a standard for managing the risk involved in using aircraft operators. The Standard is designed specifically to assist companies that engage aircraft operators to provide contracted aviation support for their operations, particularly in remote or challenging environments.

By registering with the BARS program, Chartair has demonstrated our commitment to ensuring our clients' safety standards are maintained at all times.

We take responsibility for the safety of any operation performed by our pilots and crew members. As part of this responsibility, we must ensure that all aircraft are properly maintained, have adequate operational approvals and are regularly inspected and maintained in accordance with applicable national regulations.

We also commit ourselves to ensuring all personnel involved in an operation have completed appropriate training and hold appropriate licences/certificates relevant to their roles on board an aircraft operating under our registration number(s).

This means we can offer our clients peace of mind when engaging us for their aviation needs. This also allows us to support the leading organisations within the mining, oil & gas and general industries sector, particularly within the BARS member organisation .

NAIDOC week is a time for us to reflect on the richness of our cultural diversity, honour the contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have made to our country, and raise awareness about our history, culture, and heritage.

This week, Chartair staff members from Alice Springs, Darwin and Katherine wore the NAIDOC T-shirts to show our support for NAIDOC week 2022.

We're honoured to be part of the community and are committed to the recognition, celebration and promotion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in all aspects of our business. ⁠

Chartair undertook the mission of flying bilbies from QLD to the NT, to partake in the national ecological recovery strategy by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

Chartair undertook the mission of flying bilbies from QLD to the NT, to partake in the national ecological recovery strategy by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy.

Bilbies are one of Australia's most critically endangered marsupials, but Queensland ecologists have made a significant effort to save them from extinction.

Thirty-four bilbies have been relocated from Currawinya National Park, near Hungerford, 1,000 kilometres west of Brisbane, to a new home in the Northern Territory's Great Sandy Desert with hope for the species' survival.

This is a great project that not only helps ensure the survival of bilbies in Australia but also contributes to a sustainable future for Australia's wildlife. The initiative was a collaborative effort by the Queensland and Northern Territory governments, the Save The Bilby Fund , and the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC).

In June 2022, Chartair undertook the mission flying the bilbies more than 2,200 kilometres to Newhaven Reserve, northwest of Alice Springs. Here the bilbies were released into a 9,450-hectare feral predator-free area to join 32 others that were translocated previously.

We are excited and honoured to assist in this ecological initiative towards the national recovery strategy in an attempt to have 10,000 bilbies as genetic insurance for the next 100 years.

Jaylene's Story: Chartair Observe National Reconciliation Week 2022

The staff at Chartair are observing National Reconciliation Week 2022 to create conversations around how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

We interviewed our staff member Jaylene – a proud Nyoongar woman who grew up in Darwin on Larrakia land, to hear about her stories and thoughts about National Reconciliation.

As regular visitors to Aboriginal Lands, we confirm our diligence and support to understand the complexities associated with the roles and responsibilities of the various land management and cultural heritage regulatory authorities. Through building long-lasting relationships with the Aboriginal communities and people in the areas where we operate, we strive to achieve a positive change.

We support the procedures for the conservation of Aboriginal cultural heritage, and our commitment to connecting community remains at the forefront of our business.

Here's Jaylene’s story:

Hi, my name’s Jaylene and I’m the newest member of the Chartair team. I work in operations in head office, and have been with the company for about two months.

Born in Darwin, I grew up here and in Perth. Dad is a Nyoongar man, from a small town called York. some 90 km from Perth. Mum was also born in Darwin; her dad is a Torres Strait Islander, and my grandmother is part of the Gurindji People from Wave Hill – 500 km southwest of Katherine. I recently lived on the Tiwi Islands for a few years, and that was a great experience.

I joined Chartair for something new, something different, something to challenge me. I have never worked in aviation and think this will be a great learning experience for me. So far, I have spent a lot of time learning about the aircraft and meeting the people, and understanding the hundreds of different things that go in to making a flight happen – fuel, passengers, freight, money, systems, paperwork, pilots, engineers! Wow, the list is endless!

This National Reconciliation Week is a good time to learn about other cultures and appreciate our own heritage.

So far, so good! The people at Chartair are very friendly and have really made me feel welcome. I hope that I am able to give something back to the company by sharing the experiences of my people and my culture.

Chartair Alice Springs: Where Oogii's Australian dream comes true

More than two decades ago, Oduren Tsendjav (Oogii) graduated from the University of Civil Aviation in Kyiv, Ukraine. After graduation, Oogii returned to Mongolia and began working as a Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (LAME) for Mongolian Airlines. Starting in 2004, the airline underwent significant changes and formed a new company called Aero Mongolia which operated Fokker 50 and Fokker 100 aircraft. Oogii worked hard to obtain the licenses needed to conduct F50, F70 and F100 aircraft maintenance.

Oogii, who's always up for a challenge, went on to work in several General Aviation and Commercial Airline Companies. Whilst working in General Aviation, he obtained the licence to work on the Cessna 208B aircraft. Oogii's next appointment was as Base Maintenance Supervisor for the largest domestic airline in Mongolia. He obtained the relevant licenses to perform the Boeing 737-800 aircraft maintenance. In the next 2 years, he continued to expand his expertise in the field by maintaining Boeing 767 and Boeing 737 aircraft.

After 13 years of extensive experience in aviation, Oogii began to consider the next challenge in his career.

At Chartair, our engineers like to do it with style!

Everyday they have a different meal option, ranging from a selection of quality cold meat and cheese slices on sandwiches through to a full blown barby cook-up.

Why is Chartair’s regular air service from Darwin to Peppimenarti and Palumpa critical?

Last week we sent our Marketing team to document the scheduled service out of Darwin to Peppimenarti and Palumpa.

Flying is one of the best solutions to transport goods to remote communities with limited road access, or for time-critical freight.

This is particularly important in the Top End's monsoon season, where many roads are prone to flooding. As a result, Government personnel and community health and education workers have long been reliant on air services out of Darwin, as well as the communities themselves to transport residents to and from home, and of course food and other essential freight.

How were 350 kg of fresh groceries and essential supplies delivered to Kiwirrkurra Community when the roads were all flooded?

The Chartair Mail Plane is on the move again!!

In the first week of February, Kiwirrkurra Council Aboriginal Corporation and Outback Stores organised 350 KG of much needed fresh groceries and essential supplies for their local community.

Central Australia has had the wettest start of the year on record, making many of the roads connecting Alice Springs with Central Australian remote communities impassable. Alice Springs has already received three times the average monthly rainfall, and it's only the 5th of February!

These roads act as a lifeline for remote communities to receive fresh groceries and other essential supplies. After weeks of heavy rain, supply chain issues in the remote Central Australian community of Kiwirrkurra were escalating to problematic levels.

Rainfall in central Australia is often seen as a blessing bringing fresh water to some of Australia's driest areas. However, this year, the enormous amount of rainfall has created issues for the local communities.

CA902 is one of the dozen weekly flights Chartair has undertaken for many years to service some of Australia's most regional areas. The flight includes several legs between Alice Springs - Blackstone - Patjarr - Warburton - Tjukurla - Alice Springs.

Did you know that our Mail Planes travel 1.4 million km every year? This equates to two return trips to the moon.

We deliver more than 190,000 kgs of freight and mail to 200 remote communities across these regions. This is the equivalent of carrying more than 30 fully grown African Elephants!
