The Todd River is in a very arid part of Australia and has zero to very low flow during 95% of the year.

It rises in the MacDonnell Ranges and flows southeast for 200 miles (320 km), passing through the town of Alice Springs, eventually disappearing in the Simpson Desert. When it does flow, it carries a heavy sediment load picked up from the grazing land around the Bond Springs homestead which lends its waters a milky chocolate colour and renders them completely opaque.

Other gorges in the regions are Glen Helen Gorge, a towering wall of sandstone, Ormiston Gorge famous for its waterhole and the spectacular geology and landforms.
