Darwin

Welcome

Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. With a 2019 estimated population of 147,255, it has more residents than the rest of the sparsely populated Northern Territory. It is the smallest, wettest, and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and serves as the Top End's regional centre.

Darwin is a vitally important Navy port - a gateway to our northern neighbours and the centre from which we conduct border integrity operations. Australia has a significant coastline to defend, so the Navy operates from bases located right around the country. The wharf can accommodate six vessels, berthed three abreast and is also the home to a large fleet of patrol boats.

As Darwin was destroyed by cyclones several times and suffered severe bomb damage during World War II, there are few historic buildings left in town. The Administrator's Office dating from 1883 was used as a law court and police station, and was only slightly damaged by bombs. In 1974, however, it was completely destroyed by the cyclone. In 1979 it was decided to rebuild, and the reconstruction was finished in 1981. The building houses Government offices today.

The Adelaide River weaves its way around Darwin, creating the perfect habitat for a number of Australia’s native creatures 180km long. The river rises in the Litchfield National Park and flows generally northwards to Clarence Strait, joined by eight tributaries including the west branch of the Adelaide River, Coomalie Creek, Margaret River and Marrakai Creek. The river is an inlet of the Timor Sea on Clarence Strait.
